One of the first questions every bride asks after finding her dress is: how much will alterations cost?

It's a fair question — and one that most tailor shops are frustratingly vague about. At Arthur + Lucca, all pricing is published on our website before you ever walk through the door, and we use an element-based pricing system that reflects what your gown actually requires rather than a single flat number.

Here's exactly how it works.

How Bridal Alteration Pricing Works at Arthur + Lucca

We price by gown element, not by gown as a whole. Two gowns of the same silhouette can take very different amounts of time depending on construction, fabric, and what needs to change — so pricing lives at the element level, where the actual labor differences are.

There are four elements that make up your estimate:

1. Straps & Sleeves

Option Price Range
Strapless No charge
Spaghetti straps $28 – $135
Standard straps $41 – $220
Halter / collar $41 – $230
Full sleeves $172 – $405

The range within each option reflects construction complexity — a simple spaghetti strap adjustment is at the low end; intricate strap work involving lace matching or structural changes is at the high end.

2. Bodice

Option Price Range
Flowy / draped $260 – $365
Stretch $260 – $365
Structured $340 – $425
Interior corset $340 – $590
Exposed corset $400 – $760

The bodice is often the most labor-intensive element, particularly for structured and corset-style gowns where boning, panels, and interior support structures all need to be opened and restitched.

3. Skirt / Hem

Silhouette Price Range
Column $210 – $420
Fit & flare $210 – $420
A-line $210 – $630
Ballgown $420 – $950
Tulle ballgown $565 – $1,090

Hem pricing is driven by fabric volume and the number of layers. Each layer of a multi-layer skirt is hemmed separately. Tulle is the most labor-intensive hem material — delicate, slow to work with, and unforgiving of imprecision.

A note on lace and beading: gowns with lace appliqué or beading along the hem are not fully captured in the ranges above. The amount of work varies so widely from gown to gown that we can't provide an accurate figure without seeing the dress on you. You'll receive a complete estimate including any lace or beading work at your first fitting.

4. Train & Bustle

Train Length Price Range
No train No charge
Sweep $135 – $177
Chapel $135 – $219
Cathedral $177 – $261
Royal $219 – $303

The bustle price is inherited from the train selection because train length and fabric volume are what actually drive bustle complexity — a longer, heavier train takes more points and more time to bustle correctly. If your gown has no train, there is no bustle charge.

What Does a Typical Bridal Alteration Estimate Look Like?

Here are a few examples of how the element pricing adds up:

Strapless A-line, structured bodice, chapel train:

  • Straps: $0
  • Bodice (structured): $340 – $425
  • Hem (A-line): $210 – $630
  • Bustle (chapel): $135 – $219
  • Total estimate: $685 – $1,274

Standard straps, corset bodice, ballgown, cathedral train:

  • Straps: $41 – $220
  • Bodice (corset): $340 – $590
  • Hem (ballgown): $420 – $950
  • Bustle (cathedral): $177 – $261
  • Total estimate: $978 – $2,021

Strapless, exposed corset, tulle ballgown, royal train:

  • Straps: $0
  • Bodice (exposed corset): $400 – $760
  • Hem (tulle ballgown): $565 – $1,090
  • Bustle (royal): $219 – $303
  • Total estimate: $1,184 – $2,153

These are estimates — the exact price is confirmed at the first fitting once your fitter has the gown in hand. But this gives you a realistic planning range before you ever book.

The Wedding Discount

Brides who register their wedding with Arthur + Lucca receive 15% off all alteration costs, shown as a distinct line on your estimate so you can see exactly what you're saving. For a $1,200 estimate, that's $180 back — and it applies to your entire wedding party as well.

How Expedited Fees Work

We don't charge a blanket expedited fee based on how many weeks remain before your wedding. Instead, fees apply only to phases that need to be completed faster than the standard two-week window — and only for those specific phases.

  • Phase completed in 6–13 days: 50% of that phase's alteration costs
  • Phase completed in 5 days or under: 100% of that phase's alteration costs

If two of your three phases run on the standard two-week timeline and only one needs to be rushed, you only pay the expedited fee for that one phase. The easiest way to avoid fees entirely is to book your first fitting as soon as you have your dress.

Considering a Secondhand, Sample, or Oversized Gown?

If you're evaluating a specific gown before committing to a purchase — whether it's secondhand, a sample, or a gown that's several sizes away from your measurements — we have a dedicated guide covering exactly what's possible, what to look for, and what questions to ask before you buy.
